Data-Driven Growth with Amplitude
Amplitude is an extraordinary tool for uncovering actionable insights and driving data-informed decisions. I partnered with a client to build their data analysis from scratch and leverage Amplitude to improve their app’s retention, user experience, and revenue outcomes. By the end of the project, we achieved significant milestones—most notably, improving day-one (D1) retention by 20% overnight and transforming the app’s user journey to align with business goals. Here's how I made it happen.
The Starting Point: No Tracks, No Insights
When I began working with the client, their app had no event tracking set up in Amplitude. This lack of data was a major barrier to understanding user behaviour and making informed product decisions. To address this, I:
Established Critical Tracks for Success: I started with the basics—onboarding events, the post-signup funnel, and retention-related actions. These foundational tracks were crucial for creating a comprehensive picture of the user journey.
Discovered Key Retention Correlates: Since this was a new app, we needed to identify the key events most strongly correlated with retention. Through data exploration and experimentation, we gained deep insights into user behaviour.
Redesigning the User Journey
One of the most eye-opening insights was that users weren’t engaging with the app as intended. This finding led us to redesign the app’s user experience (UX) to better align with user needs and expectations. By iterating on the design and validating changes with data, we created a more intuitive and engaging experience that boosted user satisfaction.
A/B Testing for Revenue Growth
To optimise revenue outcomes, we conducted A/B testing focused on the app’s revenue sub-screen. This allowed us to:
Test different layouts, copy, and call-to-action placements.
Identify the variations that resonated most with users.
Incrementally increase revenue while ensuring a positive user experience.
Segmenting Power Users: The “Whales”
Not all users contribute equally to a product’s success. By segmenting the app’s power users—those who generated the most revenue—we identified a group of high-value customers we called the “whales.” This segmentation allowed us to:

Develop targeted marketing and engagement strategies.
Leveraging Push Notifications for Immediate Gains
Introducing push notification data into Amplitude was a game-changer. With this new data stream, we:

Creating Dashboards for Continuous Insights
With a solid data foundation in place, I built dashboards to empower the client’s team with actionable insights. These included:
Onboarding Dashboard: Monitored new user success rates and drop-offs.
Funnel Drop-Offs Dashboard: Highlighted key friction points in the user journey.
Revenue Lifetime Value (LTV) Dashboard: Visualised revenue contributions over time.
Push Notifications & Retention Dashboard: Showed the impact of notifications on retention.
